Ashton.....

Ashton.....

June 28

Last night while visiting with Joe and Patti, they told me of a scenic byway which took me by two falls, upper and lower, a mile apart.

Mesa Falls.

Glad I took their advice and went on 47 instead of staying on 20.

The upper falls were down hill a mile.

Beautiful!

The ride back up was, well, exhilarating, and grueling.

It was what I needed.

There were a few hills on the ride.

It was longer to go this route.

But more than worth it.

Pedaling into Aston, I stopped to look at my maps.

And see where I might be able to pitch my tent.

I noticed a pizzeria and since I was hungry, I slowed down.

Asked those working on decorating the windows outside about a place to camp.

They recommended a place three miles down the road.

Of course I was hungry, so went in and had a salad and sandwich.

Mighty tasty!

The name is:

Five11Main

511mainashton.com

Bicyclists, or anyone passing through here, should stop by and get your fill of good food.

So there you have it.

The last few days in a nut shell.

I am still pedaling and will be going down through the Palisades area.

Missing two passes by going this route!

Follows the river so should be scenic.

I am not sure about the time frame for getting to Albuquerque.

And am just fine with that.

Leave a comment if you like.

Continuing to joy in the journey,

On to Buffalo CG.....

On to Buffalo CG...

June 27

Today was hard.

Must have complained every other minute.

Got maybe thirty miles.

The traffic was crazy.

The road was rutted and ill fixed.

I was discouraged, hot and tired.

Could not get any speed up on the recumbent.

Yet.....

Why did I not remember the wonderful night's sleep?

The tasty cinnamon roll I had for breakfast?

Going up the highway and four ram sheep following beside me in the field?

I would stop, they would stop.

I would go, they would go.

Lasted about a half mile.

Getting treated to the beauty of creation all around me?

There was so much for which to be thankful.

And I was complaining about not going fast enough or not making enough distance.

I was concerned about finishing a goal.

And then....

I arrived at Buffalo Campground.

Met Gordon, the camp host for one of the sections.

Asked about where to pitch a tent.

Took me to a site, raked out the tent pad, and made sure all was good.

Got some fresh water and guzzled it down.

Was nice to have something cold going down the throat.

Also met Joe and Patti who were in the spot next to where I was tenting.

He had some powerful stories to tell of how the Lord intervened in his life.

A great time of sharing.

They truly were great encouragers to me.

Joe offered me food.

I declined.

He offered again.

Very generous and gracious.

This morning, the 28, when I went over to say my farewells to them, Joe prayed a wonderful, simple, yet powerful prayer over me and the ride.

The Lord is showing me to be thankful in all things.

Even if I do not get the miles "I" think "I" should be achieving each day.

The people I am meeting far outweigh all the other details.

Continuing to joy in the journey,

D.

Yesterday's Cafe....

Yesterday's Cafe....

June 26

Left 7.45 from Virginia City RV Park

Got to Ennis 9.30ish

Breakfast at Yesterday's Cafe.

An old fashioned omelet and iced tea.

Was delicious and filling.

Met Martin and his friend pedaling east on the Trans Am Trail

And then as I was heading out of Ennis, I met a couple from Switzerland.

They are doing east to west.

www.usa-coast2coast.com

They both sat in the recumbent and took pictures.

Sabine (?), told me about a great camp site that they stayed at the night before.

West Fork Cabin Camp

www.wfork.com

A fantastic place to stay.

And the cinnamon rolls in the morning would rival anyones.

Saw lots of eagles flying in the area.

THE BAG.....

THE BAG.....

Lost bag...found bag.....

June 25

In all the miles I have traveled on this ride, I have never lost my go to bag.

THE BAG.

Never.

It has always been strapped onto the back rack of the recumbent.

Never fallen off.

Never!

Whenever, wherever I would stop, off it came.

Up and onto my shoulder.

To the loo.

Into a cafe.

At a rest stop.

Never say never!

Today it happened.

Let me back up a bit now that you all are intrigued.

Is not that a great way to hook people into reading the rest of the post?

I had a great night sleep.

Stopped at a spot outside of town.

Basically, set up and went to sleep.

The day of riding (24) itself had been hard.

Got twenty eight in the morning and the destination, Virginia City, MT was still another thirty miles away.

Could not get any speed or distance in the afternoon.

God knows our plans more so than we do.

Stopped at this really cool place only for bicyclists.

Saw Steven, the bicyclist from Germany.

He was going a different way, so we said so long and exchanged emails.

Drew got his bike fixed.

Steve and Ralph, the ones raising awareness about ebola in Liberia, were way ahead of me.

Was a pleasure cycling with these men for the few days.

To today again.

Talked with a few of the neighbours in the camp ground.

Enjoyed a very relaxing hot shower.

Scraped the whiskers away.

Did laundry.

Yeah for clean laundry!

Worked on the bike.

Cleaned and re-greased the chain.

Repacked a few items to get to them easier.

Then......

Decided to go the mile into Virginia City to have a burger.

Well, anyway, something to eat at least.

I strapped my go to bag, THE BAG, onto the back rack as I have since I began this ride all those many hundred miles ago.

Same way I always do.

Well, I guess it must have been time for a new and different way of strapping it to the rack.

Got to town.

THE BAG was gone.

Now you need to know this bag, THE BAG, is my go to bag.

Stays with me all the time.

Has my journal, maps, phone, camera, cards, notes, addresses, plans....

In a nut shell....

It is THE BAG.

Need to be honest.

My heart did skip a beat.

Then I prayed.

I prayed that even though I could not let any of you know the situation, you would be praying as well.

I went back up the hill.

And slowly came back down the way I had originally traveled to town.

Straight down the hill.

Searching with as much intensity as my eyes could handle.

Nothing.

Went back up the hill.

Against the traffic.

One must do what one must do.

I mean, this is THE BAG.

If it is lost I am up that proverbial creek without a paddle.

And then...

There it was!

Lost and then found!

I cannot put into words how joyful, exuberantly joyful, I was to find THE BAG.

Was like my long time friend returned to me.

Straight away I figured a new way to attach THE BAG to the rack.

And....

To celebrate, I came back into town, is it the third or fourth time, to finally get myself a burger.

A bacon, swiss cheese, avocado burger, fries and a root beer.

Again, the enemy tried to discourage and confuse but not when I have people praying and the Lord Himself looking out for me!

So!

It has been a crazy, delightful, glorious day!

What was yours like?

Continuing to joy in the Lord,

D.

Tomorrow starts out with a four mile climb up the hill. Then a nice down hill. Ennis is the destination.

And prayerfully....

Into Idaho the next day bypassing Yellowstone.

Too many vehicles and not enough shoulder.

Another time.....

Big hole.....

Big Hole.....

June 23

Before I begin this post, I need to share a verse that has kept coming back to me many times on this journey ride.

"Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. But do this with gentleness and kindness. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ."
1 Peter 3.15-16

The words that pop out at me are, "they will be ashamed."

They will be ashamed but we as believers are to not be ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.

Interesting, do you not think so?

---------------------

Last night (the 22) was really something.

Six other bicyclists all camping out at Jackson Hot Springs.

Everyone of us took advantage of the opportunity to soak tired and sore legs from climbing up the passes.

Laugher and stories.

Ideas passed around of how best to handle the two passes we had to cross over today.

Some more story telling.

And somewhere in the whole mix of it all we ate.

Even threw down an ale with the crowd.

One of the riders got to the spot late and the kitchen was already closed.

One waited to eat and had a huge turkey sandwich. Loaded with turkey!

The one has a nursing degree and we talked about some of the ethics involved with long range patient care.

I basically threw my two cents in here and there while he talked.

Also talked about life, death and marriage.

He was a very interesting fellow with many varied ideas and opinions.

I stayed up a little later than I usually have on this journey.

Woke up earlier as well.

----------------------------

Which brings us to this day, the 23 June.

Woke around five and began putting all the panniers and bags on the bike.

Filled all the water bottles.

Drew was up as well and he left a few minutes before me.

Although I did take a few photos with the camera and phone, the majority of my time was spent concentrating on the ride.

It was most definitely challenging.

Two passes this day.

Big Hole at 7400 feet and the one after it at 6500 feet.

Glad my brakes work well as I used them several times on the down hill side of today's ride.

Hit 43 mph with the BOB trailer following along.

Just a wee bit fast for my liking.

After that it was pretty much downhill all the way to Dillon.

Which is where I am now, sharing a tent site with four other bicyclists.

When I came into town on the frontage road which somewhat parallels the freeway, I stopped at the ice cream store that so many others have told me about.

Had a delicious huckleberry milkshake.

I waited there to see if Steve and Ralph would be coming by.

They are pedaling to raise funds for ebola care in Liberia.

And they know a few people from Wycliffe that I know.

Is that God doing his fancy work again?

Certainly is.

I will be riding with them the next couple days until we head different directions when we hit Wyoming and the park.

And Stefan from Germany has been riding with them for the last while.

Totally have enjoyed talking with him about Germany and his rides around the country.

Drew had trouble with his bottom crank of his bike.

It is funny in a beautiful kind of way.

He had left Dillon and was on his way up Hwy 41, when he felt as if the crank was loose.

Turned around, came back to town and found a lady who is taking her bike to Helena and will pick him up in the morning so he can get his bike there as well.

And the shop has the part he needs.

Again, thank you Lord for working out the details in that situation!

So here I am in my tent, writing and being able to send as well, as the campsite has wifi!

How wonderful is that?

Quite!

I must say that sitting around the picnic table with these men and sharing has been a privilege.

Looking forward to the next two days.

It is amazing how we are all here tonight when we all thought we would be going different ways, stopping at different sites.

God is pretty cool that way, is He not?

So glad He has better plans than ours.

As always,

Continuing to joy in the journey,

D.

Forgot to mention that for dinner tonight I had a whole freeze dried meal to myself.

And did it ever taste good!

Thanks to Ed who I met at the Florence IGA for sharing several packages with me.

It is true what they say.

You need not worry about how much you eat while you are riding, as you will burn it all off, and more, as you ride!
